Bio

Nkosinathi Maphumulo, born in 1976 and raised between Durban's Umlazi township and Mthatha, loses the use of his left arm at fourteen when a car strikes him during Nelson Mandela's release celebrations in February 1990. He studies jazz at Technikon Natal, passes through the Red Bull Music Academy in 2003, and releases a self-titled debut in 2005 on his own Soulistic Music label. His Afro-house is patient and melodic: deep, jazz-schooled electronic music built for long nights.

Albums from Home Brewed (2009) to Pieces of Me (2015) carry his sound abroad; Subconsciously (2021) wins the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2022. He holds eight South African Music Awards and a 2016 BET Award, and in October 2023 becomes the first South African artist to sell out Madison Square Garden. In summer 2025 he headlines Greenwich's Old Royal Naval College, still touring the world's biggest rooms.
