Scope
The Viranova SA Culture Index ranks public artists, topics, events and organisations represented in Viranova’s South African culture knowledge graph. Categories and commercial service pages are excluded. The Index measures movement inside Viranova’s observed audience and coverage universe; it does not claim to measure every South African audience or platform.
Signals used
The composite uses published Viranova coverage volume, first-party article reads and media views, on-site search demand, and recency. Every eligible entity is resolved to one canonical knowledge-graph record before scoring so spelling variants and repeated mentions do not become separate entries.
Scoring and ranking
Raw signals are combined into a trend score. The current leader is normalised to 100 and every other eligible entry is expressed relative to that leader on a 1–100 scale. A score is comparative and can change when audience attention, search demand, coverage or the leader changes.
Update cycle and record
The live Index is rebuilt continuously and displays its last-updated date. The machine-readable table is available at /culture-index.json. Viranova Pulse is a separate, edition-based product with frozen historical editions and its own methodology.
Attribution and limitations
Every figure should be attributed to “Viranova SA Culture Index” with the displayed date and a link to the Index. The data reflects activity Viranova can observe; unavailable external-platform signals are not estimated, and absence from the Index does not imply cultural insignificance.
Corrections and changes
Entity merges, source errors and material methodology changes are reviewed by Viranova. Corrections can be submitted through the Corrections Desk. Material methodology changes will be described here rather than made silently.
Methodology last updated: 30 August 2026.
