Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron, born in Benoni in 1975 and raised Afrikaans-speaking on a farm outside Johannesburg, left South Africa at sixteen on a modelling contract, trained in ballet in New York until a knee injury intervened, and arrived in Los Angeles in 1994 nearly broke. The Devil's Advocate (1997) supplied a breakthrough, and her range has since settled between raw character work and precision-built action. Her transformation into Aileen Wuornos in Monster won the 2004 Academy Award for Best Actress — the first acting Oscar for a South African — with further nominations for North Country and Bombshell. She produces through Denver and Delilah Productions, anchors franchises from Mad Max: Fury Road to The Old Guard, funds HIV/AIDS prevention through her Africa Outreach Project, and plays the goddess Calypso in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, due in 2026.
