DJ Tira

DJ Tira, born Mthokozisi Khathi in KwaHlabisa, KwaZulu-Natal, in 1976, has spent almost three decades as the engine of Durban dance music. He started DJing in 1996 while studying at university and turned professional the following year, moving through Durban kwaito into gqom, Afro-house and Afro-tech as each wave arrived — usually with him pushing it. In 2007 he founded Afrotainment, the label that signed DJ Cndo as its first act and later Big Nuz. His compilation Ezase Afro Vol. 1 sold over 20,000 copies, and the catalogue kept building: Ikhenani won Best Kwaito Album at the 26th South African Music Awards, 21 Years of DJ Tira (2020) is certified platinum, and he took Best Kwaito/Gqom Song at the 2023 Metro FM Music Awards. He continues to run Afrotainment as both a talent pipeline and an argument that Durban's sound deserves the national stage.
