International recognition can create a strange pressure for African fashion labels: become globally legible, but risk becoming less recognisably yourself in the process.
African designers are often framed as having “arrived” once Paris, Milan, London or New York validates them. Imprint’s 2026 trajectory offers another model: international recognition can expand an African brand without requiring the visual language, cultural memory and continental relationships that made it distinctive to be diluted.
Mzukisi Mbane’s 2026 is offering another route.
“Our African identity is not the limitation to our global ambition; it is the reason for it.”
In June, the founder of Imprint South Africa was awarded Best Designer Africa 2026 at Africa Fashion Up in Paris. The prize was presented by Balenciaga Global Sustainability Director Annika Mohr Storfält and forms part of a wider development programme that includes mentorship with luxury-industry experts, training and exposure through institutions including HEC Paris and Istituto Marangoni Paris.
The obvious career move after a Paris breakthrough would be to keep looking north.
Mbane went back into Africa.
Imprint appeared as a headline fashion designer at the Standard Bank Luju Food & Lifestyle Festival in Eswatini before travelling to Nairobi for Noir Kenya Fashion Week. In Kenya, Mbane presented a 23-look collection that did not abandon the brand’s past in search of an internationally fashionable new identity. Instead, it revisited and reworked prints from across more than a decade of Imprint’s own archive.
The label’s reach has continued beyond those runways. Miss World South Africa Romanda Hombir also wore Imprint while representing the country in Vietnam during the 2026 Miss World competition.
Taken together, those moments make Mbane’s year more interesting than a simple “South African designer makes it overseas” story.
Paris matters. So does the Balenciaga-linked mentorship. So does international visibility.
But Imprint’s response to that validation has not been to strip away the visual language that created the attention in the first place.
The brand describes itself as Afro-Futuristic and Pan-African. Its prints are not decoration placed on top of an otherwise generic global luxury product; they are part of its memory, identity and authorship.
The strongest sign of Imprint going global may therefore be that it increasingly has less reason to explain or dilute where it comes from.
The world is getting a bigger version of Imprint.
Not a quieter one.
