- The SAMA32 shortlist and the awards’ return to the North West show a South African music industry shaped by many hubs, regional scenes and independent paths to recognition.
- SAMA32’s shortlist shows a South African music industry no longer defined by one centre. From Durban Gqom to Maskandi, Amapiano, Jazz, Gospel and regional scenes, the country’s sound is spreading power across many hubs.
The 32nd South African Music Awards (SAMA32) are scheduled to take place in the North West province in August 2026.
On paper, this appears to be a hosting partnership aimed at supporting local tourism, visibility and the provincial creative economy. However, the SAMA32 shortlist, alongside this geographic shift, reflects a broader trend that has been developing in the industry for years: the decentralisation of South African music.
Johannesburg has historically been the primary hub for the music industry.
For many years, relocating to Gauteng was widely seen as essential for building a national music career.
That is no longer the only path.
The first SAMA32 nominee announcements in June 2026 reflect a wide geographic and stylistic spread. DJ Lag’s Meeting With The King (2022) and Funky Qla’s Dark or Durban series highlight the continued influence of Durban’s Gqom scene. Maskandi artists such as Mbuzeni continue to demonstrate the strength of regional music ecosystems. Meanwhile, Amapiano artists — including Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa and Young Stunna — appear across multiple categories, reflecting the genre’s dominance in the current mainstream.
That variety matters.
The SAMA32 list reflects not only genre diversity, but also the growing independence of regional music infrastructures.
Artists no longer rely solely on major urban industry centres to build careers or validate their sound. Streaming platforms, independent teams, regional audiences and direct fan engagement have made it possible for artists to succeed from multiple locations.
Durban continues to influence national conversations through Gqom.
Maskandi maintains strong regional support while expanding its reach.
Amapiano operates globally while remaining rooted in township production networks.
That is the shift.
South African music is no longer defined by a single centre. The industry now reflects multiple hubs, scenes and pathways to recognition.
The landscape is broader.
And the diversity of sound reflects that expansion.
