“The song was inspired by the orchestral music movie August Rush. It’s my favourite movie of all time,” Nathi MaQ explains.

From that exercise emerged the idea of making the violin the dominant voice in a 3-Step production—an instrument more commonly associated with orchestral performance placed within a contemporary South African dance framework.

Nathi MaQ wanted to create something that could move listeners physically without abandoning the feeling carried by its central instrument.
“It’s not something you hear every day, and I wanted to create something that felt emotional while still making people move,” he says.
The decision also reflects the wider creative world from which Nathi MaQ approaches music. Away from the studio, he works across filmmaking, acting, directing, scriptwriting and fashion design. He holds a Law degree from the University of Johannesburg and trained at the Duma Ndlovu Acting Academy as part of its Class of 2018.

Nathi MaQ independently conceptualises, shoots and directs many of his own visuals, including the music video for “Abangani.” His previous releases—“Abangani,” “Ngiyahluleka” and “Embo”—have similarly contributed to an identity shaped by the relationship between sound, image and storytelling.
