Rewinding the Archive: Basadi’s Fifth Anniversary as Cultural Memory

A name is read, a winner walks to the stage, social media erupts and, by the following week, the industry has moved on to another release, controversy or red carpet. Even significant achievements can become detached from the longer history that made them possible.

The fifth annual Basadi in Music Awards is attempting to resist that disappearance.

The 2026 awards take place over two nights—7 and 8 August—at the Mandela Theatre at Joburg Theatre. The Vanguard Awards are scheduled for the first evening, followed by the flagship Music Awards on the second. The official anniversary theme is REWIND, inviting guests to revisit and reinterpret the fashion, milestones and defining moments of the event’s previous four editions.

Some promotional coverage has expanded the phrase to “REWIND: The Rise.” Basadi’s official event material, however, consistently identifies the central theme simply as REWIND.

That distinction matters because the concept is broader than one upward career narrative.

The awards are looking back at the visual and cultural vocabulary through which they have presented women in music since the inaugural ceremony in 2022. Year one used “Ball Gowns & Tiaras.” The second year embraced African glamour, commonly presented at the event as “African Royalty and Sneakers.” The third edition turned inward through “Girl in the Mirror: Our Re.flexion.” The fourth drew on earth, water, fire and air through “Symphony of Harmony—Four Elements of Nature.”

For 2026, those themes are being treated as a collective archive.

Guests are encouraged to return to a previous visual language and reinterpret it. The red carpet therefore becomes more than a fashion display. It becomes a timeline: royalty, heritage, introspection and elemental strength reappearing together in one room.

The hosting arrangement extends that idea into the ceremony itself.

Anele Zondo, Moozlie, Unathi Nkayi and Lerato Kganyago—the women associated with hosting the previous editions—are scheduled to reunite for the anniversary celebration. Anele Zondo and Moozlie hosted the inaugural 2022 ceremony, while Unathi Nkayi hosted in 2023 and 2024 and Lerato Kganyago led the 2025 main awards. LootLove is separately scheduled to host the Vanguard Awards on 7 August.

That is more precise than saying the four women represent “the past five years.” Before the 2026 ceremony takes place, there have been four completed annual editions. The fifth anniversary brings those previous eras into the present.

Basadi’s archival value also extends beyond the people placed at the centre of the broadcast.

The organisation was established to recognise women across the music ecosystem, including performers, songwriters, DJs, producers, journalists, radio and television professionals, stylists and other creative workers. Its awards archive records winners across both public-facing and behind-the-scenes categories.

In 2025, the introduction of the Vanguard Awards further formalised the recognition of managers, entertainment producers, hairstylists and other professionals whose work is essential to music careers but often absent from the main awards-night narrative.

That does not automatically make BIMA a “safe space.” Safety is a specific institutional condition requiring policies, accountability mechanisms and evidence beyond celebratory language. What Basadi demonstrably provides is a dedicated platform where the work of women is not treated as a side category within a predominantly male awards structure.

The difference is important.

At many industry ceremonies, women compete for visibility inside institutions whose histories, leadership cultures and most prestigious categories were built without them at the centre. Basadi reverses that hierarchy. The question is not whether enough women can be added to an existing event. The institution begins from the position that their work constitutes the event.

REWIND also acknowledges that institutions need memory if they are going to build authority.

A trophy records one result. An archive records patterns: who was recognised, which kinds of labour became visible, which musical movements shaped each year and how women chose to represent themselves at particular moments in the culture.

The Basadi archive is still young. Five editions cannot document the full complexity of women’s contribution to African music, nor can one annual ceremony correct every structural inequality in the industry.

But remembering is part of institutional power.

When achievements are not recorded, each generation of women is made to appear as though it arrived without predecessors. The same barriers are described as new, the same breakthroughs are celebrated as unprecedented and the work required to build a platform disappears behind the final televised image.

By bringing its previous themes and hosts back into the fifth edition, Basadi is insisting that its own history should remain visible.

REWIND is therefore not merely nostalgia.

It is the act of refusing to let the women, labour and cultural moments that built the platform vanish as soon as the next awards cycle begins.
