Sjava — Jabulani Hadebe, born in 1983 in Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal — was writing songs for his school isicathamiya group at ten and acting in television dramas by 2005, years before the music paid. His self-styled African Trap Music sets Zulu melody and idiom over trap and soul production, sung almost entirely in isiZulu in a low, deliberate register. The 2016 debut Isina Muva — its title a Zulu idiom for a late bloomer — went gold and preceded a 2018 BET Award for Best New International Act; Umqhele took Album of the Year at the 2019 SAMAs. Cassper Nyovest — born Refiloe Maele Phoolo in Mahikeng in 1990 — began rapping at twelve, left school at sixteen and moved to Johannesburg in 2008 to chase music full time. The gamble paid off in 2013 with Gusheshe and then Doc Shebeleza, singles that fused motswako's Setswana wordplay with big-room hip hop; he has since folded kwaito and amapiano into the mix. He founded Family Tree Records in 2014, released seven albums from Tsholofelo to the chart-topping Solomon (2023), and built the Fill Up series into a national event, selling out the Ticketpro Dome, filling Orlando Stadium and moving 68,000 tickets at Moses Mabhida Stadium. The enterprise has widened since: the Billiato liquor brand, Root of Fame sneakers, television hosting on SABC 1 and a celebrity boxing record that stands at two wins and a loss.

Nasty C is the rap name of Nsikayesizwe David Junior Ngcobo, born in Diepkloof, Soweto in 1997 and raised in Durban, where an older brother taught him the basics of production at nine. He released his first mixtape at fourteen, and the 2015 single Juice Back — later remixed with Davido and Cassper Nyovest — announced a technician's ear: quick, melodic verses that sit as comfortably over trap as over soul samples. Named Best Freshman at the 2015 South African Hip Hop Awards, he has since released five albums, from Bad Hair (2016) to Free (2025), through his own Tall Racks Records with Def Jam Africa. Zulu Man with Some Power took Best Hip Hop Album at the 2021 SAMAs alongside an MTV Africa award, and I Love It Here carried him onto an international tour that opened in Paris in October 2024.

Tyla Laura Seethal comes from Edenvale, east of Johannesburg, and starts out posting covers and original songs to Instagram during her final year at Edenglen High School. A self-released debut single, "Getting Late" (2019), earns her a deal with Epic Records in 2021. Her sound is "popiano": amapiano's log drums folded into compact pop and R&B songwriting, South African in its rhythm, global in its finish. "Water" (2023) makes her the first South African soloist in 55 years to reach the US Billboard Hot 100 and wins Best African Music Performance at the 2024 Grammys, making her the youngest African artist to take one. She wins the category again in 2026 for "Push 2 Start", the first artist to do so twice. Her 2024 debut album reaches the Billboard 200's top 25; the EP WWP follows in 2025, and second album A*Pop arrives in July 2026 with a world tour underway.

Thatohatsi is the stage name of Thato Raphadi, a vocalist from Payneville in Springs, on Gauteng's East Rand. Her voice is formed in church music, and it shows: an amapiano singer who works in sustained, hymn-like phrases rather than hooks. She emerges professionally in 2024, and the breakout is 'Xolele', made with Ntando Yamahlubi, Mphoet, Blaq Note and Jaz, which gains major traction on TikTok. Kabza De Small's 2025 album Bab'Motha confirms the ascent: she is its most-featured vocalist, appearing on 'Ngiyozama', 'Incwadi Yenduduzo', 'Izimbali' and 'Iphupho'. She has recorded with Mellow & Sleazy and Kelvin Momo, sung at Kelvin Momo's Red Bull Symphonic concert, and keeps the features coming — 'Vulani' with Kelvin Momo and Da Musiqal Chef in early 2025, 'Galile' with MaWhoo, Maline Aura and ShaunMusiq in 2026.

Msaki, born Asanda Lusaseni Mvana in East London in 1988, is a singer-songwriter whose guitar-led indie folk and Afro-soul runs parallel to a second life as one of South African house music's most trusted voices. She started out in 2008 with the rock band The Patience, holds a Master of Fine Arts from Rhodes University, and has released independently through her own label, One Shushu Day Artistry, since her 2013 debut EP Nal'ithemba. 'Fetch Your Life', with Prince Kaybee, is certified six-times platinum and 'Sondela', with TRESOR, three-times platinum, while her album Platinumb Heart won Best Adult Contemporary Album at the 2022 SAMAs. Named Best House Artist at the 2024 Mzansi Kwaito and House Music Awards, she returns in February 2026 with Entropy, a collaborative EP with Jesse Clegg born of a friendship forged through mutual grief, led by 'Wayside Lover' featuring Sjava.

Kabelo Petrus Motha, born in eMalahleni in 1992 and based in Pretoria, starts DJing in 2009 and releases a first album, Avenue Sound, in 2016. It is "Umshove" (2018), with vocalist Leehleza, that fixes him at the centre of amapiano, the log-drum-driven house offshoot he helps define. As Kabza De Small he records at a pace few in the genre can match, across solo albums, joint projects and a long run of singles. By 2020 he is South Africa's most-streamed artist on Spotify, and I Am the King of Amapiano: Sweet & Dust goes double platinum. He holds thirteen South African Music Awards, runs the Piano Hub label, and forms the Scorpion Kings with DJ Maphorisa. His 2024 Red Bull Symphonic concert sells out in five hours; Bab' Motha (2025) becomes his first album to chart globally, and in 2026 he launches a second label, Tech Hub.

Zandile Nxumalo is born in Eswatini in 2003 and raised in Alexandra, Johannesburg, releasing her debut EP KwaNxumalo in June 2022 at nineteen. She sings amapiano and 3-step with an afro-pop instinct for melody, a clear, agile voice that quickly makes her one of the scene's most sought-after features. "Funk 55" (2023), with Shakes & Les, DBN Gogo, Ceeka RSA and Chley, goes five-times platinum and wins Record of the Year at the 2024 South African Music Awards; "Thula Mabota" with Pabi Cooper goes platinum. The EP Inja Ye Game arrives in late 2024, and "Ngisakuthanda" reaches No. 1 with a triple-platinum certification. She is named Artist of the Year at the 2025 Basadi in Music Awards and leads the 2026 nominations, with "Mamma" up for Song of the Year.

MaWhoo — Thandeka Nontobeko Ngema, born in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal in 1994 — was determined early: at eleven she carried a recording to a local radio station, which turned her away as too young. She debuted properly in 2019 with Umshado, featuring Heavy-K, and her light, agile voice, unmistakably Zulu in its phrasing, has become a fixture on amapiano and 3-step records. Thokoza with Sam Deep (2022) is certified double platinum and Kulula, with DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small, gold. Four albums in four years — from What a Time to Be Alive (2022) to Amazwi Okubonga (2025) — chart her move from featured vocalist to lead act, and the 2025 single Bengicela topped Apple Music's all-genre chart in South Africa while she performed across Botswana, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

Dlala Thukzin — Thuthuka Wandile Zindlovu, born and raised in Lamontville, Durban — has been producing since 2016, when he cut tracks for gqom star Babes Wodumo as a teenager. His signature is synthesis: gqom's menace, amapiano's swing and afro tech's polish folded into the rolling hybrid South Africans now call 3-step. Phuze (2021) went gold and its remix double platinum, but iPlan (2023) is his biggest record to date, topping multiple South African charts and earning double-platinum certification. AmaGear, with Zee Nxumalo, debuted at number five in 2024; Finally Famous Too won Best Dance Album at SAMA31 in December 2025; and the projects 031 Studio Camp 2.0 and MAYVIS kept 2025 moving, alongside a BET Award nomination for Best New International Act.

JAZZWRLD is Kamohelo Monese, born in Lesotho and raised in Carletonville, the gold-mining town on Gauteng's Far West Rand. He first produces as Jazzworx, rebranding as his ambitions widen, and grows up steeped in jazz — an influence audible in the warm chords he threads through 3-step, the Afro-house-adjacent sound he builds with vocalist Thukuthela. He produces Ciza's "Isaka (6am)", which spends nine weeks at No. 1 on Billboard's South Africa Songs chart in 2025; by year's end, five of his songs with Thukuthela — among them "Vuka" with Oscar Mbo and "Uzizwa Kanjani" with MaWhoo and GL_Ceejay — have reached No. 1 across Southern Africa. An armed robbery at his home in August 2025 costs him equipment and unreleased music; he keeps working, and plays the Cape Town International Jazz Festival in March 2026.

Shekhinah is Shekhinah Thandi Donnell, born in Pietermaritzburg in 1994 and long based in Durban. She served a televised apprenticeship, reaching the top 32 of Idols SA in 2011 and the top 6 in 2012 while still a teenager, before developing into a songwriter of polished, radio-fluent pop with an R&B undertow. Her 2017 debut Rose Gold is certified multi-platinum and swept the 2018 South African Music Awards, taking Album of the Year and Female Artist of the Year; 'Suited' is certified diamond and 'Please Mr' platinum. In 2019 she founded Rosefest, a festival platforming women in music, whose 2025 edition ran at Johannesburg's Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in August. After Trouble In Paradise (2021, certified gold) she self-released her third album Less Trouble in August 2025, following it with the EP Love on Repeat, Vol. 1 in June 2026.
